I know this has probably been talked about before but here goes again. Having grown up with AC's I know they are notorious for 3rd gear problems. Trouble is I was just a kid and my dad was the one fixin 'em. Now I have a CA that pops out of 3rd gear when the tractor is under a load. Is it a worn gear or a worn shifting fork, or both/neither? Someone tell me replacing 3rd gear is not the big deal it appears to be in the manual.

Replacing third gear is not a big deal.Thats what you wanted someone to tell you.If you 've read the manual you pretty much know what to do.First off don't use third gear at all until you fix it.My experience has been that the gear, shifting collar and shifting forks can all be ok and you can still have this problem. The thrust washer at the back end of the top shaft wears away letting everything slide back too far. This stops the shift collar from engaging completly, letting it pop off the tooth rounder under load. If caught soon enough you may only need the collar and a couple dollars worth of thrust washers. If you contiue to use third gear you'll end up putting in the gear also.So what are you waitin' for? Go get your hands dirty. ct
