CA vs. WD

I don't know much about Allises but which one would be better? Anything that one can do and the other can't? Does one cost more or more desireable than the other? Someone told me that they were nearly the same horsepower. I saw stock WDs kickin' butt at local pulls against JD's over the summer and I thought I might try a Allis for the first time. I don't pull or plan to pull just use the tractor for cultivating, raking hay, sickle mowing,etc. Can I square bale with a CA?

I had a WD that I baled hay with a JD 24t with a kicker. The WD had plenty of power to run the baler. The governor would kick in though when the kicker kicked. If the baler doesn't have a kicker or thrower the WD should be able to handle it. If it's not a big square baler that is, lol. I have a CA and I use it for raking hay. I have two rakes, one's a 6 wheel rake with hydraulic lift. I use the CA on that one. The other is a Ford 5 bar rake with a manual lift. I use a B on that one. I would think the CA would be better on a sickle mower or cultivator than the WD.

Well I guess how much bailing you want to do. The CA is getting up on horsepower and has less weight to pull around. My guess is it would bail hay. The 45 we had on the farm where I worked as a kid (in the late 60s) was more than enough for a John Deere 24T bailer, 50 lbs. square bales. Before they got that tractor in 1956 they used a AC B for all farm work and at that time the bailer was a New Holand 77, which I think weighed about 2 1/2 tons. The B pulled that thing every where and some of the land rented was some miles off the home farm. I admit that the B didn't have to do the actual work of bailing, there was a 4 cylinder Wisconsin for that. The CA would be handier, the WD a heavier stronger running tractor. Why not end up with both?

The CA is more comfortable to operate and might be a better choice for light work and gardening. Otherwise the WD is a lot more tractor. If you want to run a PTO square bailer, or pull and bailer and loaded haywagon on any kind of hill you probably want to look at a WD45 or D-17.

I think the WD to be the better all around tractor. The hand clutch is a better set-up on the WD. If you plan to put a belly mower on it then I would go for the CA. Both are gutty pullers, will do all they were designed for and then some.
