D14 Starters

What is the difference between the 6 volt and 12 volt starters a D14? If you change to a 12 volt ring gear can you just change to the 12 volt starter? The reason I'm asking is, a friend of mine ordered a new ring gear for his 6 volt D14 and got a 12 volt ring gear, and now the starter won't work.

I changed my D14 to a 12 volt system and had to have Central Tractor build me a starter. They used a 6 volt starter gear, which is larger in diameter than the one in a 12 volt starter, then converted the rest of the starter to a 12 volt system. Didn't have to change the ring gear. Works fine. It sounds like your friend needs to change the gear on his old starter to the one used on a 12 volt starter, a smaller diameter gear. If I remember right the 12 volt gear has one less tooth.

My D-14 was converted to 12 volt a few years ago, leaving the old 6 volt starter in it. I found out when I tried to replace the starter when the bendix wouldn't kick in properly. Since replacing with a rebuilt 6 volt starter (to avoid the gear problem you mention) I have not had any problems. Just be sure you don't run the starter too long, or you can heat it up or burn it out. Seems to work just fine for me.
