How to tell if a d-14 is good??

I am looking at a d-14 and need some advise on how to tell if it is a good tractor.
It has excellent tin with factory paint that is faded but good yet. Wide front power steering, 60% tires that are weather cracked, 3rd gear is out. Has the 2pt hitch thing, and a woods belly mower. Do these tractors has a figh and low, how does the hyd and pto work. He is asking $2800.00 for it is this fair. It is a 1959 and has 5000 hours on it, started right up and it was 6 below. What do I need to check on. Thanks Gene

To fix the transmission is big bucks at a dealer. A three point hitch conversion is just over $400 for a good one. This tractor has 26" tires which are a non standard size so they cost extra. Check the hydraulic fluid level to make certain that it isn't leaking into the transmission. PTO is controlled with the lever near your left shin. It isn't live unless you are using the power director lever on your right side to stop the motion of the tractor. The hydralic lift is on the left side of the steering column. Again it isn't live unless you just use the power director lever. The power director lever is the large lever on the right side that has a button on the end. It is in low range when pulled back. In the center position it is in neutral. In the forward position it is in high range. It is a wet clutch that is great for chores like baling that require you to slow the forward motion of the tractor but still allow the PTO to continue turning. These are great tractor, for less than you would pay for a Ford 8n you get twice the tractor. With the bad 3rd gear I wouldn't go over $2,000 at the most on this one. Good Luck!
