I have a WD45 Diesel with the Buda 6 cyl. 230 cu. in. engine. I have completely overhauled the engine, but had to have the block welded and decked to clean it up. With the flat head I know the piston to the head is very close. Mine is much closer now. What is the minimum clearance with the engine cold from the piston on TDC to the head that I need. When the piston heats up I would guess that the piston/head clearance will reduce by a small amount. I had a local racecar engine builder tell me that he keeps a minimum of .050 clearance cold on a gas engine. What about a diesel? I need to figure how much to turn off of the tops of my pistons. Any serious responses are appreciated.

Tractor Nut; If you maintain .050" clearence between cyl head and the top of the pieton, you will be in good shape. This measurement will not change enough to be of any concern as the block,pistons, and head heat together and have very simular expantion rates. Diesel engines are an entirely different animal. They can be extremely diffacult to build properly. Because of the extreme compression found in these engines, as well as injestion pump pressure,regulation and timing diesels are best left to only trained people. The week end mechanic can easily accidently screw them up real bad. Hope this helps, J.L.
