Hydraulics addition on C

Hi, I'm thinking of adding a new hydraulic pump to our C. One of our neighbors suggested using a power steering pump from a car and mounting it on the right side of the engine. Any comments or suggestions? Has anyone tried this before, and if so, how did it work? Any other suggestions for a reasonably priced hydraulic unit? We live where it gets cold (Michigan) and have found out the orginal hydraulic unit doesn't do very well in the cold. Thanks for the help.

You probably would want to add the P.S. pump on the left side (the side where the carb is).

i just redid the hydraulics on my c and there not that much to them.. very simple in design.. what is your pump doing that makes y0u want a new one,is it slow or not let down rite or what... there are two plugs in the bottom of the tractor transmission.. one plug is on the bottom side of the pto section the other is kinda under up futher to the front before you get to the gear shift..these plugs use a 3/8inch rachet to loosen.. the fill plug is back from the clutch pedal and before you get to the seat. its about two and a half inches from the bottom on the side of the trans.. i used 10w 30 motor oil in mine and it works great even in 0 degree weather.. these style of pumps have low volume but rather high pressure in fact the relief valve in pump is factory set at 3200psi.. lot of pressure for a little pump.. if need more help or if i confused anymore get on the allis chalmers web page theres a lot of top mechanics on there with more expereince than me.. mike [watchwinder]

Before you give up on the original unit, make sure that you have the right fluid in the trans. It should have an AC compatible hydraulic/transmission oil in it. The old original manuals call for 20W engine oil, but the newer hyd./trans. oil have additives to help reduce gear wear that engine oil doesn't have. If there's any 90 weight in the trans. the hydraulics will be very slow. Just a thought. Good luck, Paul

Okay guys..... hate to be ignorant here but it's my first tractor!!! Yep a rookie! Not new to the country just did everything with horses before. What is the correct weight and how do I change it? You will probably get tired of answering my questions but I know with your help I can master the beatiful orange beast in my barn! Thanks in advance.

I think the book said 20 wt. That was 50 years ago when most oil was "not so good". Today a lot of guys use 20wt hydraulic-transmission fluid. Thats good stuff and does not foam. Like others i have also used 10w-30 engine oil in the trans-hydraulic-pto, same stuff i put in the engine. There will be guys that say it dont work, but its fine. The best thing is to keep it light weight, whether you decide to use transmission fluid of engine oil. No gear lube or 50 wt allowed.

You could get a belt PTO and hydraulic unit off
a CA and adapt it
