Still having problems starting my 42c when cold. Never had problem starting before I rebuilt carb.My compression is 75 on each cylinder and a local told me that was too low , I needed at least 90. He told me to add a qt of motor oil to my gas to give it lub on top of the pistons . Sounds crazy to me. I have not tried it yet , would like some comments pro and con . Does not make sense that one day it starts great and the next wk it does not start great because of compression when I have not done anything put start it a few times, change oil , rebuild carb and a few other maintance items. Thanks Fred

Hard cold starting could be a number of causes.
I have a 53B that has been completly overhauled and the only way I can start it in cold weather is to remove the air cleanaer cap and hold the flat of my hand over the intake pipe to choke it harder.

My brother in law had this problem with a 42 C, and the shop near us fastened the spring loaded flapper on the choke plate so that it could not open. It starts beautiful now.

I also have a 39B, rebuilt, with a new carbuerator. I only run this in the summer with cultivators. The float valve sticks shut on this, and I have to bang on the inlet pipe to get to open.

A friend of mine, who was an AC fieldman, told me the problem with the sticking needle valve is due to the new valves being made with an "O" ring for better sealing. However, the rubber ring causes the valve to stick shut. If you overhauled your carb, you might have used one of these type valves, and it is sticking shut. The vibration of the engine tends to keep them from sticking after you are running.

Anxious to hear how you solved the problem.

your compression is definitely to low. this is going to cause you problems later on thats for sure. a good engine will run 120+psi.. in cold weather your compression will run a little lower cause of the contraction of metals in cold temp.. i know this has nothing to do with your rebuilt carb, but i would consider a engine rebuild pretty soon.. get that baby pulling air and compressing rite and the carb rite youll be able to just look at it and it will start..

The next time it won't start pull the plugs out and see if they are wet. If they are dry it's not getting gas.

Fred; You're compression is a tad low. However adding a quart of oil to a tank of fuel will only cause the engine to smoke like a furnace, also will carbon up the pistons, DON'T do it. I still think it's the carb. Pull it off, check the chock to be sure it is working properly. Then check the float, needle, & seat. Check float level setting, also be sure inlet needle and set seal properly and reopen without sticking. You might try this, Once you get her started up and warmed up, hook it up to something HEAVY, easy the slack out of the chain, don't jerk it out, then pull the load in low gear and at about 2/3 throttle for about 30 seconds to a minute. this will heat the pistons and rings and may reseat them. Don't over do it, listen closely to your machine if any unusual noises are heard stop at once. J.L.

Choke it good but I think my float may be a problem. When I put the top half of carb on it appears that the floats are bottomed out and they only have a 5/32 inch swing or float area from top to bottom. But if the float does have a problem why does it run so good once I do get it started?

This method of setting a float works on a lot of carbs

Adding oil to the gas gives you oily gas, nothing else. You sould like the tractor is hard to start, but if finaly does???DOes it run o.k. after starting. I am betting that the bowl runs out of gas overnight and causes the hard starting. If everything is o.k after startup, then you know you have adequate compression and spark. All thats left is gas. I would overhau lthe carb again.---just my opinion.

After it starts it runs like a top and will restart all day long anytime you want it too.Carb holds gas over night, it just acts like it is not getting gas, but after choking, not choking, gas , no gas it finally will start but I don.t know what process to repeat the next day to get any consistancy.

Check to make sure the choke is actually working. could be some loose linkage or something. Or the choke could be not closing all the way. Take off the hose between the air cleaner and the carb and have a look at how it is actually working. Maybe not the problem but easy to fix if it is.
