D17 generator conversion

The delco 10SI is a common choice. Go to Auto Zone for $35. They came on mid 1970's Chevrolet. There is a 1/4 inch positive batter terminal on the back and two spade connectors on the side. You can buy a special twin spade connector for this. The number tow or "F" terminal has 12 volts all the time. The no 1 or "R" terminal is the resistor terminal. NOrmally this is connected to the idiot lite on a car. On a singelwire system you can put a diode in this line and connect to the 12 volt terminal so volts can flow from the alternator to the battery, but not the other way and drain the battery. I believe a better way is to get a large resistor, 10 ohm, 10 watt from radio shack for $2. it is brown and 1/2 by 1/2 by 3 inches long. The resistor drops voltage slightly and makes the alternator charge at lower engine speed. It must be connected to a terminal on the key switch so you can cut the circuit when not running, or battery will drain backwards. Just reverse the terminals on the battery and amp meter and you are ready to go. Some people reverse the wires on the coil. Its a good idea, but dont seem to make any difference. The starter and ignition (coil and point) dont realy care. The lower bracket to mount the alternator will work. You need to modify the upper bracket or make a new strap. Pulley will come with the new alternator.
