WD or WD-45 ?

I recently purchased an Allis with the number at the base of the gearshift of 200931. According to the chart on this site, that makes this a 1955 WD45. However, the decals on the side only WD. I also have another AC that has the WD45 decals on it. Can you have a WD45 without the WD45 decals? (assuming all are original parts)

PS I have been watching these posts for some time now and finally have made a purchase of the tractor mentioned above. Thanks to the help of all of you I feel more informed and felt knowledgeable about how much to spend. Thanks!

Most WDs had the straight shift lever and a sliding gear transmission, 45s had a curved shift lever and a constant mesh transmission that shifted easier. I think 45s had a 5 plate hand clutch, WDs had 3 plates, 45s have more tubes in the radiator. About the time of the change from WD to WD-45 the stees bracket on the wide front end that bolts to the front end casting was made larger too. There are other little differences like this that you can find out about by reading the parts book.

The Tractor serial # for the WDs & WD-45s is located on the LH vertical surface of the differential, below the brake inspection cover. Look for a machined flat spot between the spring hole and the brake adjusting bolt/locknut. The tractor serial nos. for both WDs & 45s begins with WD. An original WD engine has a bolt on plate on the side of the block which covers the lifters and pushrods. An original 45 engine is a solid casting (no plate). The engine serial no. is located on the side of the block just below the hose from the air cleaner to the carburetor. WD engine ser.#s begin with WD and WD-45 engine ser.#s begin with 45. As for decals, of the repainted WDs, I wouldn't be surprised if at least half of them are labeled WD-45. To the unsuspecting and uninitiated, the subtle differences between the two tractors goes unnoticed.

Your serial no. matches with a 1955 WD-45. Someone probably just put the wrong decal on at some time. They quit making the WD in 1954.
