I recently purchased a WD45 which I plan to restore. The tractor has probably not been used for 2-3 years. It starts and runs well. Here are some facts and I am looking for recommendations from some of you experts out there. 1. It needs new gaskets on the crankcase and valve covers. 2. The tractor was warmed up on Saturday and I checked the compression. It was a uniform 90 psi on each cylinder. My AC service manual says it should be 130 psi. I sqirted about 10 drops of 20 weight oil into on cylinder and the compression went to about 120 psi. I didn't have time to check the other cylinders while the tractor was warm. 3. Yesterday I checked the compression on all cylinders while it was cold. Again the reading was 90 psi. After squirting in some oil, the reading went to about 100 psi. 4. The engine holds an excellent oil pressure while cold and warmed up. What would you do? Does it need rings or would you let it go? Will this low psi reduce its power?

Personally I'd change the oil and add somethig
like Marvel Mysrery Oil this will help loosen any
stuck rings,then put it on a disc, blower or something
that will make it work for 40 hours,the compression will probably come up.

Pouring oil on pistons of worn out engines often gives a false higher compression reading.

I agree, run it, and see what you really need and want to do. It is possible that as you use it other things would show up that you could take care of while the engine was out. Such as leaky seals somewhere, or a clutch that slips under load. Even a gear that won't stay in gear. Run it and see what you need or want to do after a while. A pan gasket and valve cover gasket are easy, take care of them to keep the oil from getting all over though. And change all the gear oil, transmission and final drives, and hydraulic oil too. Enjoy it, these are fine tractors.

A low octane fuel motor only has 90 pounds of pressure, the gas engine has 130. I'd say change the oil and run 'er. See if it will do what you want and then make up your mind.
