B model light switch

can i use a cutout with the new style on/off headlight switch or do i have to go to the old
3 position charge switch?i would like to make the
cutout work instead of a voltage regulator,but still use the 2 position modern switch.thanks in
advance-bill

the cut out relay on the generator is basically one half of a voltage regulator. the light switch serves two purposes. One is that it turns the lights on and off. The other is that it contains a resistor that is gounded on one side and connected to the field terminal of the generator on the other. The resistor makes a "weak ground" and makes the generator charge at low amps with the switch off. When the light switch is pulled out, it bypasses the resistor and shorts the field wire from the generator to ground and you go to full charge, about 8-10 amps.---so yes, you can remove the light switch and wire up with a new one. then to make the generator charge you need to ground the field wire (full charge), or put a toggle switch on the field to ground and you can then turn the charging on and off, or third you can get a regular voltage regulator like used in a 1960 car and wire it up. There are pictures of the above available in the "submit articles" at the left of this page, probably under "generator". if you cant find, or need picture, post again and i will photopoint.
