I have a 39 B with a magneto that didnt work until I filed the points. needless to say it packs a wallop! I put a spark plug in next and it sparks every time I turn it. Is this supposed to happen or should it spark on every 4th turn? please explain how a magneto works? Thanks

ange; Your magneto is working properly. There are four lobes on the shaft that break the points. One for each spark plug. the magneto works exactly like a distributor in a car, the engine turns 2 revolutions to 1 of the mag. They do indeed pack a punch and can really hurt if you get bitten. Make sure you bring #1 piston up on top dead center of the power stroke and line the rotor in the mag up on #1 plug tower before installing. J.L.

Will take to long to explain how Mag works but what happening is you did not ground out the other three spark plug wires so the spark is arking inside the mag to the only ground it has , the sparkplug. Mag should work Ok.
