Installed different generator on tractor today and have it wired according to the schematic in the archives listed here. The problem that I'm having is that when I first polarized the generator it was charging around 24 amps, after running a few minutes it read about 8 amps. But after I shut tractor off amp gauge still showed it charging back around 20. Thanks in advance for any help on this problem.

It is not possible to charge the battery with the engine off. In hooking things up you must have reversed the polarity of the battery or the amp meter and what you are seeing is discharge current. Good luck

OR you just failed the amp gauge. These little tractors only charge about 2 or 3 amps with the light switch off. When it it pulled out, the generator goes to full charge which is almost 10 amps (maybe 8). I dont know how you got to 24 amps. I guess the gauge has failed. Take the battery cable off and see if the gague stilll reads 20.

Steve, I did notice yesterday that when I pulled the wire coming from the amp meter to the field terminal on the generator that it still had fire on it, because it arced out on the bracket. According to my schematic it shows a wire from the starter to positive side of the amp gauge and a wire coming from the light switch to the ground side, then a wire from the ground side to the field terminal, is this correct. Or do I have the wire from the light switch in the wrong side. Thanks for any help. Buddy

Dick it looks like I may have one wire crossed according to your schematic. Thanks Buddy.
