You do not have the governer gear mark on the WC's as on the B's, C's, and CA's. Probably the best way is to assemble the magneto to the governer and hold the rotor in the number one fireing order as you engage the the governer gear into the camshaft gear. Might have to make a couple of stabs as the rotor turns as it moves into place on the cam gear. Of course this is done at top dead center of the compression stroke on number one piston.

Since you haven't gotten a response on this yet, I will try. Perhaps when someone more experienced reads this they will help you also. An old Amish tractor man came to my house to time my WD which has magneto also. He knew what he was doing and I will try to tell you what he did. He worked two different ways. One: he took out #1 plug (front one) and put his thumb over plug's hole and asked me to push starter. He needed to determine when the #1 piston was in the "up" position. When pressure pushed his thumb off hole, piston was up and ready for fire from plug. Now, that means that the contact arm in "distributor" needs to be set at the position where the #1 plug wire comes in. When tractor starts you can fine tune timing by rotating mag on slotted bolts that hold it on. He did not get tractor started using this method so he went to his second way. AC firing order is 1243. He put everything back on tractor and put #1 plug wire in #2 hole on distributor, he put #2 in #4 hole, #4 in #3 hole and #3 in #1 hole. If you think about this it means he simply moved every plug wire forward one spot on distributor. Tractor did not start, it backfired. He again rotated the plug wires one spot. Again no start. He moved the wires the third time and tractor started and ran perfectly. Now you can leave wires in this changed position or you can take off dist. cap and rotate contact arm, I believe, one full turn for each time you moved wires. I watched him and it was tough for me (not a mechanic) to catch it all. Maybe someone else will help out here too. I think I would try second method first. Much easier if you think about it first. Good luck.

you got the right idea Dan. On method 1 instead of your thumb, stick a welding rod in the spark plug hole and turn the engine over slowly with a braaker bar on the crankshaft. when the rod rises to the uppermost position it is at top dead center. No 1 should be firing (or which ever one you have the welding rod in) at this time. YOu then set the distributor or mag cap with the arm pointing toward that spark plug wire. The only trick tehn is to see that the rotation of the mag and the counting of the plug wires is in the same direction.

The welding rod will only tell you the piston is at the top of the stroke,it could be the exaust stroke. The thumb will tell you your at the top of the compression stroke, which is where it should fire.
