I rewired my model C, installing a brand new cutout, new light/resistance switch, cables and wires of correct gage. Essentially - brand new everything. I rewired it per diagram. Very simple, only 9 wires. The finishing touch is to connect the pos. ground cable to the battery. The only problem is that I get a massive spark (obviously shorting somewhere). I am absolutely positive the wiring matches the diagram. Any clues on where to find the short. Please help!

i run a copy of the diagram and use a highlighter on it to color in each wire as it is run. try to finish the job with out stopping and don't have anyone around to destract you. besides the meters, harbor freight, advanced auto, napa etc have a short finder that may locate the problem. cost around $27. its a two part kit. one part goes in line at the battery and limits the current so nothing burns. the second part is a meter that is held near each wire and indicated if that wire is shorted and if so in which direction.

Joel,
On some of these, like my WD, Beware that the Starter switches on the starter had insulation, originally, isolating the post from the case. Your ammeter may have a frame holding it into the case that is not supposed to be electrically connected. You probably gotta follow Dick and Steve's suggestions, one wire at a time.

One wire at a time. get a wire long enough to go frome the front of the tractor to the swich box and attach it to a wire at the front and check to make sure that you have the correct wire at the switch box. If you purchased a new wireing harness from Agco the two black wires do not have the colored tracers and can very easely be mixed up at the switch box. Back when I started rewireing machine circits we used a telephone bell rather than an ohm meter to make sure you knew which wire you were working on. It was called ringing they out. Remember think one wire at a time.

After checking the wires again as Dick mentioned, if you still have a problem, maybe it is a missing insulation or plastic washer on the voltage regulator, or the light switch terminals are a good spot to look. Do you have a grounded terminal on the light switch touching something? Might try disconnecting the light switch, then connect battery and see if o.k. Then touch one wire at a time to the switch untill you get the one that is grounded and sparks.
