Wd-45 hard starting

I have a problem with hard starting on my wd45.
I rebuilt the motor this fall from oil pan to valve cover ran like a top until it got cold.
It always did take a few seconds to kick over but it always started and ran very well. Now that it is cold, seems every time I start it the timing is waaaaa y off. It will kick the starter, cough thru the carb, and sometimes catch and try to run when you stop cranking it. If I retard it, I can get it fired up, but to get it running nice I always wind up with the distributor right back where I started at, firing it up once warm still seems like it takes a little longer than it should. I have put in new plugs, checked the points, which are new, checked the valve lash, and I have rebuilt the carb, fuel filter in the fall, along with new everything in the motor. I was wondering what in the %^$& is causing this problem. Could the advance weights on the distributor be stuck fully advanced? The thing runs like a scalded dog once warmed up. Would an electronic ignition help my problem? Any help would be appreciated

As you suspect, the problem is stuck advance weights in the distributor. It is not so much tat the weights are stuck as it is the cam that is stuck to the shaft. It is fairly simple to take the distributor apart and free the cam from the shaft. Once you have the advance working properly, the hard starting will go away. Good luck.

well, finally tore into the distributor, and you were right. cam was frozen solid to the shaft. removed entire unit and soaked it in diesel fuel (minus all the wiring). freed everything up, Put it back together, and re-installed it. Damn thing popped over in about half a turn with a really low charge in the battery in 20 degree weather. Talk about a HUGE change and it cost me about a buck in fuel, and an hours time. Thanks again for the info.

Did you install the rods correctly? Also if you
have a 4.5 inch stroke crank and put in the flat
top WD pistons you have raised the compression
to about 11:1 which is good for pulling but not
for general use
