Pinhole leak in carb float

My 1936 AC Model "M" has a Zenith carburetor that is cast iron and weighs at least six pounds. Built for a lifetime, but the float has a pinhole leak (in the center, away from the seam). How do I get the gas out safely? And what's the best way to seal the leak. I soldered them forty years ago, but ruined about as many as I fixed. Thanks in advance.

I never tried JB weld on a float but I'm sure it would work fine. I repaired a 1/4" hole in a plastic chain saw gas tank with it three years ago and it's still holding fine. Good luck, Paul

Hank I take all of mine to the local radiator shop, he dips them in the tank an drops solder on the hole an hardly ever charges for the job.

Never tried it, but how about using JB Weld to fill hole?

I had the same trouble with the carb on my MF2135. I got the gas out by running hot water on the float with the pin-hole down. The expanding air pushed the gas out the hole. I knew it was all gone when air came out.

Soldering was easy but you have to be fast and use an iron (not flame). I started by cleaning the brass real well and tinning (wetting the area with a film of solder) around the hole and then letting the float cool down. Cooling the float is important because that will let the expanded air return back into the float and prevent collapse after you seal it. Once it's cool and you have a hot iron, melt a good drop of solder on the tip and "flash over" the hole in one quick pass. That should seal the float without heating it enough to blow the solder out of the hole again.

Test the float by submerging it in hot water. No bubbles means no leak. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries. Good luck.
