After searching the archives I still need some information on painting. How much paint do I need to cover this tractor? 2 maybe 3 quarts. How many coats do I apply? I figgured 3 or 4, but really don't know. I just painted a truck bed 7'x8' and spent less than $50, I am hoping for less than a $100 on the tractor, Any thoughts? Johnny

Have been using XO-rust orange 27 with gloss hardner. Love it.

I go to Quality Farm & Country when they have a tractor paint sale. Buy a gallon of there Allis paint for 15.95 plus tax, stop ona way home at NAPA and pick up a can of hardner for 23 bucks, go home mix a batch and have at it.

I have bought Quality Farm&Fleets AC orange paint when they had a sale. Worst overspray I have ever seen for aerosol cans. Has to be good paint it sticks to everything including my concrete floor(can't get it off now). I put down a big pieces of cardboard when I painted my AC planter, but overspray still went everywhere. Quality F&F's IH Red is definitly junk, it fades and peels badly in about a year.

I don't know about there spray cans. I don't like the Oliver green from Quality, have not used the IH red.

For my first attempt at tractor restoration I tried BPS from TSC because it was cheap. Big mistake. Stuff fades, peels, and discolors after a year or two. Since I am into JD naturally I use their paint now. I am assuming that paint sold by AGCO at an AGCO dealership while costing more than the $17.99 "EL CHEAPO" will last longer and look better. As another interesting point on AC persian orange, I went to the last "AGELESS IRON" EXPO in Ankeny IA. One of the vendors there was selling AC paint. He claimed that most orange paint sold as "Persian Orange" is in fact slightly the wrong color, but that he had the correct colormatch. Apparantly AC changed the paint once or twice over the years. Just something else to worry about.
