When I start up tractor I get 2 amps reading on ammeter. with voltmeter I read 2 ampsDCV coming off the Field terminal on gen. Battery read 5.0 when started and builds up to 7.0 while running.I'm assuming all this is correct so far.If I pull out Lt switch ammeter still reads 2.0 put Field termial goes to 0?When I pull Lt switch all the way ammeter still reads 2.0 and Field still reads 0? My ammeter acttually moves up to about 4 amps but my ammeter may be a little off because I have to tap it sometimes to get the initial 2 amps. But my Field terminal never reads over 2amps no matter what position the Lt switch is in. Lts do not work either but all I have is rear and not sure if it works or not, just put in anew bulb. Any ideas? Thanks Fred

Check your voltage regulator.

Fred,

I hope you realize you must put the meter is
series with the circuit. That means you actually
need to take the field wire off ond run all the current through the meter. As an earlier post said be careful not to put too much current through your meter. But, the best way to tell if it is charging properly is just it unhook the battery while it is running. If it continues to run it charging. Then try your lights and switch positions.

Fred,

Jeremy's suggestion about disconnecting the battery and see if the tractor continues to run is excellent except if the tractor has a magneto (been there, done that). I don't know if all Cs came with dist. or mags. Just a thought!

For those reading who may have done an alternator conversion, DON'T disconnect the battery with the tractor running! Almost certain to ruin one or more of the diodes in the alternator.

Just because I have a voltmeter doesn't mean I know how to us it, thanks for the lessons.I took F wire off and let current run through it, I got about 1/2 amp however my ammemter did not show any amps til I jiggled the Lt switch and it read about 5amps, went back and checked off the F termnal and there was my 5 amp reading in all three Lt positions. took + ground battery cable off , still runs and ammemter still shows 5 amps. Every other time I turn the tractor off I get a 5 amp discharge, I wiggle the cover to the relay and it goes away, whats the deal with that? Thanks Fred

The points are sticking in the cutout.

I thought the points were sticking also, and they may have but I worked with the tractor many starts with the relay cover off and they never stuck, the first time I put the cover back on , I had a short before I ever started the tractor up, I adjusted the cover and the short went away. Thanks for the help

Dick is right, the coil inside the voltage regulator is sticking, the other coil in the regulator may be bad, or a bad wire to the light switch. When the light switch is pushed in you should get about 2 amps running, when you pull the light switch out you get about 10 amps charge, maybe 8. The resistor in the light switch takes care of this, if it is working. When you shut the tractor off, the coil in the voltage regulator should open and stop the charge, if it sticks then you will discharge. If you tap on the cover, the points will pop loose. Pull the cover off the regulaotr and touch the coil contact points with a pencil erasor while it is running , then when off. You will learn a lot.

Fred, I'm guessing that your using a multi-meter, perhaps a digital multimeter. You have to be carefull,as to what range you are using (function switch) on the meter ,as you can fry the multimeter very quickly by pulling current thru the meter. Most of them require and external shunt , if your going to measure more than about 500 mili-amps. Remember, an amp meter is in series with the source and load, a volt meter is across the load or source to ground. Almost all ammeters are actually 50 miliamp devices with either a internal or external shunt to give them the desired current range. I'm not trying to be a smart a-- , just don't want to see you fry your meter. Good Luck Dee
