We bought our home here two years ago, and with it came an Allis Chalmers C that runs like a charm. (I am the second owner!!) It looks pretty bad, but never once failed to do what we asked her to do. Anyone know how to tell what year it is exactly? Also, I would love to find a place that has has a t-shirt or something with a C on it. All I ever see is John Deere!! Also, what's the most important thing to keep an eye on with it? What goes wrong? Thanks so much for your info. I appreciate it!

Gwen; If properly maintained, you're C should last a life time "+". Most already have. As for trouble spots, they are few. The steering can become loose,easy to correct. The starter drive will sometimes go bad and eat up the ring gear on the fly wheel, not so easy to fix. Listen to the starter at each start-up. If it fails to engage it makes a grinding noise. Check drive and ring gear at once. Run a good motor oil, I use 15-40 Rottella T. Change oil and filter every spring, more often if the tractor is worked hard. I also suggest draining and refilling the transmission at the same intervals,80-90 gear oil if you DON'T have a hydralic pump, Mystic or Philips tractor
Hy-Trans, [Hydralic-Transmission], oil if you DO. Final drive
cases use 80-90 gear oil, same drill, every spring. Also use 80-90 in the steering gear case.
Have fun with you're "C", one caution, as you probably have been told, avoid very sharp turns, and running across hill sides and ditches, as row crop tractors are easier to roll over in these situations, than their wide front cousins.

Heres the other book - "Antique Tractor Bible." I find it more useful than my owners manual most of the time. It tells you anything you need to know about tractors, in easy to understand language. Again, click the link to get to get to it.

One thing that you must check is the rubber boot over the shift lever. If it is cracked, torn, or worse yet GONE water will get into the transmission and hydraulic system and cost you money, maybe a lot. This applies to all AC tractors. The ones with a PTO on the bottom of the transmission (like WDs) can fill the pto with water and crack it to say nothing of the rust caused. Always keep a good boot on the shifter,If in doubt change the oil and put a new boot on, cheep and hastle free compared with the damage water can and will do.

Very good point Tom, I had what looked like mayonnaise in my case, plugging up my hydraulic pump. I had to flush the case 3 times before being satisfied with the condition of the oil. Luckily, rust damage was avoided. As for the boot, I got an almost exact match from a local Deere dealer. Gwen, it's very handy having a good local source for replacement parts. My local Deere dealer, for example has been able to get me everything I need so far from TISCO.

Get a chance, log on to EBAY Farm equipment portion. EBAY almost always has tee shirts for sale with most farm tractor logo's on them. Good luck

Wow...thanks for all the suggestions! As for my C's rubber boot---it is nonexistant! Luckily it is kept in a garage. I am not sure it has always been, though. What would be a good indicator of damage from water, as described? It doesn't smoke much, which is good, and the tranny seems to run fine. Thanks again for all the info. I can't wait until tomorrow to run down there and get the serial number to see what year it is. One more question...what does an original seat look like? The original owner put a funky carpet covered box type thing on it. Thanks again so much...I am in your debt! :)

You can look at the oil through the fill plug, or pulll the drain plugs, two I think, and let a little oil out, you will see if there is water. It would not be a bad idea to change the oil anyway, most people never do but it is good for your transmission and hydraulic system if you have one. Use 90 weight or 80w-90 weight gear oil if you don't have a hydraulic system, and 20 weight non detergent engine oil if you do. Same goes for the final drives, take off the cover from each side and clean out the old oil and revill with gear oil. And watch that boot over the years, it will last long enough for you to become complacent, like 10 or 15 or more depending. And have fun with your tractor.

Gwen, here is a good reference picture of a typical model B or C. The seat is merely a padded rectangular cushion about 4" thick with a rear back support. The cushion is covered with vinyl/naugahide. Talk to ya soon.

Gwen, It's Joel again. There's not much room to type in these little boxes! By the way, I have a '49 "C" and love it dearly. As far as the year of yours, look on the housing, just above your shifter. You will see the serial no. stamped into the casting. Knowing this, you can tell almost exactly when yours was made. Click the link below to get to the serial no. page. Then see which year your tractor falls into based on your number.
(i.e. 62424 would be a 1949.)
