D-17 Tough Shifting

I have a difficult time shifting the transmission on my D-17. Occasionally while moving in reverse the transmission will shift into neutral by itself. Anyone have any ideas on what may be wrong?

Ike; I assume the shifts are made while setting still. The transmissions on D-17's are not sychronized, therefore shifting on the fly can be very tough on the tranny. If the transmission is low on oil, or filled with wrong oil this can cause stiff shift lever movement.[i.e. if the trans is filled with 80-90 gear oil.] If the tranny is filled to the proper level with the proper oil,[Hy-Trans,Hydralic-Transmission oil], then check the main clutch to be sure it is properly adjusted. An improperly adjusted clutch makes shifting very diffacult. Jumping out of reverse is likely caused by worn reverse idler gear or bearing, could also be a worn or damaged shift fork or bushing. You did'nt say whether the hi and low range selector is working properly, If not the power directer clutch may be shot, [hope not]. Hope this helps.
