JUST BOUGHT 36 WC AND HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE SMALL SHIFT LEVER THAT MOVES A GEAR BOX BACK FORTH ON A SHAFT DOES.

Where is the lever located? I don't think they had the cultivator lift release until te styled ones in 39. If it is right next to the steering column and pretty low with a rod going down under the tractor, then it's the PTO engaging rod. Can you give us some more details about the lever? Where it's at, size, where it goes, etc.

if the lever is next to the steering colume it is used to raise the culavitar with the tractor in gear while standing still used this a few times my self in tight spots with the culavitor

I think you are referring to the live power lever. This will engage or disengage your rear wheels. This way you can use your pto while the tractor remains stationary.
