WD Hydraulic Question

When I raise my three point after it has reached the top it makes a real loud knocking sound (ex. similiar to a rod knock). Then I have to find the exact hold position to make it quiet down. I am assuming my pump is toast. I have a front end loader with an externally mounted pump (extra). I have a 3 spool valve. I only use two levers and the other is blocked off. Can I disconnect the tractors orig pump and use the third valve or will it not work because my loader has two-way pressure and the three point remotes don't have down pressure.

Sounds like your original pump is working OK.

The WD45 hydraulic pump works very different from modern pumps. When you overload the pump (as you indicated by raising the 3-point after it has already reach the top) the pump unloads three of the four pistons in the pump to prevent over-pressure damage. It continues to allow one (small) piston to pump against the pressure to keep the pump in the unloaded mode (that's the knock you're hearing) until you bring the control back to the lowering (or hold) position.

The WD system is a low volume, high pressure system with normal unloading pressure at 3500 psi (give or take 200). Most modern hydraulics only run up to 2000 so converting your's to run on the newer system may not work unless you also change the 3-point rams to bigger cylinders.

Jim, it should not knock. It has an internal pressure release that should releave the pressure after it reaches a certain psi. I don;t remember what it is but it is around 2000 or 3000 as I recall. Either the releif valve is sticking or the pump isn't reaching the proper psi. Hope this helps.

That is how your pump should work. Keeping the lever up keeps the pump pumping. You have to return the lever to the "neutral" position to stop the pumping.

My WD is quiet when it gets to the unload position with a snowblower on the back.
