Update on C wiring problem

Still no conclusion but I'm making headway. I determined the repair shop had replaced my starter switch with the wrong one, it is now corrected but still no voltage showing up on ammeter. I stright wired the generator to battery post and had 5.5 DCV standing and 7.5 DCV running 3/4 throttle, so I guess generator is working. Hook it all up through the instrument box and get 5.5 standing and 5.5 runing 3/4 throttle. Put voltmeter leads on "bat" and "F" while running and got less than 5DCV. Does any of this make any sense to anybody,does anyone have any more suggestions. Thanks Fred

I forgot to mention that nothing works in the instrument box, magneto switch nor light switch and Its wired per diagram.

you have to have a good light switch or the generator will not work. the light switch makes the circuit complete. see the drawing posted up above on this same site for bandit. with the light switch pushed in, the generator charges at low amps. With light switch pulled out it charges at high amps. if the resistor on the light swithc or the terminals are bad on the light switch it does not have a complete charge circuit. it sounds like you proved this by going straight to the battery and eliminating the switch-???

you can just put it together and hope it's just the amp. and go with it if you're sure the generator is working.

Fred,
I'd replace that ammeter. Sounds to me like the shunt resistor inside is bad. You can determine if this is the problem by shorting across it with a 10 Ga. or larger wire. If the voltage at the battery goes back up to 7.5V while running at 3/4 throttle, the meter is the problem.
