My '54 CA has a problem in the clutch. When I first start it I cannot get into gear without a real serious grinding of the gears. Once I get the transmission stopped and into gear it is ok from then on when I want to change gears. I have screwed the clutch rod out as far as possible and any further would proably ride the throwout bearing even if I could get it out further and still get the peddle and all back together. I am hoping I won't have to take the thing apart.... Any ideas?

I have a similar problem with a B. Not only does the clutch stick on start up, but it doesn't release when stopping for a second or so. This started after switching around transmissions, torque tubes and engines. I think it may be the clutch plate hanging up on the splines of the drive shaft where they have worn in different tractors in non compatable ways. I haven't taken the tractor apart yet to check it out. the only other thing that could cause these problems is the clutch disc sticking to the flywheel or pressure plate. Be interested to hear how you solve your problem.

One obscure cause listed in the AC B shop manual is the wick sticking out of the end of the crankshaft too far. So if you rebuilt the tractor and replaced the wick,that is a possibility.

Ya might try startin them up with the clutch pushed in. If it will shift without grindin then it aint the clutch hangin up. I can show you with a picture where to adjust it if it aint da clutch.
It aint purdy or fun but ya can get it stopped. Bout the same as changin a clutch as far as work.

I had the same problem as this the other day, it was cold (about 5 degrees) and couldn't shift my WD for anything. I shut off the tractor, shifted into gear, then started the tractor with the clutch in, no problem. So what caused this & how do I fix it?

Not sure. Grease could be to heavy, could have water in the transmission and frosted up. If it worked ok after it run a while, probably one of those.
