I have pu a chevy alt on my 1958 d-17 to replace gen hooked wiring up with diode between alt and coil ,wired from alt to amp meter then to battery. yet the beast wont even turn over. I got juice to solenoid Yet starter will not turn over any body have any ideas???

alternator should have nothing to do with the starting. as mentioned by others you should jumper the solenoid, then run straight to the starter if necessary. I did a change over several years ago and it works good. Delco alternator should be the internal regulator type. must have two spade terminals on the side, not the back. they are in line. The no 1 terminal(R) has the diode (I use a 10 ohm resistor) inline to the starter switch. The other terminal no 2 (F) must be powered with 12 volts just like the big 1/4 inch lug on the back. I dont remember doing anything to the solenoid or starter switch. Might check how solenoid terminals are powered and grounded after the battery change.

Thanks, I'm gonna replace some cracked and original wiring then will try jumping selinoid I will let u know results..Thanks again

first thing jump the solonoid and see if it turns over. if not go right to the starter and jump it there with battery or booster pack.this will at least eliminate trouble in the starter or solonoid.check all your cable connections too.hope this helps
