Gas leaking out of carb-help!

42 C had not been run for several years when I started restoring it the gas streamed out the bottom of carb when not running only so I used cutoff at settlement bowel.After moving it inside my shop I realized cutoff at bowel is not working properly and a slow drip still comes from bottom of carb(slow drip all night adds up) I rebuilt carb, runs great , no leak noted all day after installation but next morn , floor full of gas again. My only solution is new settlement bowel assembly?? Any more thoughts out there?

Fred, Most of the carb kits now have a Viton (rubber) tipped needle because of the problem you discribe. If the kit you used had an all steel needle you may have to mate the needle to the seat by giving it a light tap with a punch. It is very easy to screw up the needle and seat by hitting it too hard. I use a 1/2 or 9/16 wrench for the "hammer" and just tap the punch once. If you have need to use the tractor, just driving it around will do the same thing by bouncing the needle against the seat. A new sediment bowl from TSC is about $20, best money I spent on my tractors. I have made a habit of shutting off the fuel before I shut them off, and now they start effortlessly,.... when I remember to turn it back on.

I had two of those rubber tiped jobs that never sealed last summer. I think the rubber was distorted. I put the old brass ones back in both carbs and they stopped leaking. I saved them and plan on putting them in hot water and put the valve down in the seat with a little pressure and see it that will help. Both carbs were on my pulling tractors and the get a lot of bouncing around running up and down the roads.

Had that same trouble myself with a B carb and the rubber tipped needle. I figured that I got the only bad one they made. Kind of makes you wonder about the others who post here when their tractor still won't run right after a carb re-build.

I used a 1939 B for 10 years, we always shut the fuel valve off at the sediment bowel and let the engine run untill it ran out of gasoline. We never rebuilt the carbutretor and it always dripped until the engine was running. This tractor was operated this way for for 40 years that I know of.*
