It appears I have a 17 that does not like this cold weather. Refuses to start even with tank heater and battery charger on all night and half the morning. I have a good 850 amp cold cranking battery in it. Barely turns the engine over even with the charger on full boost. After it has run long enough to warm up it starts right off every time. Had my brother pull it with his wd, started as soon as I let the clutch out. [wd had all it wanted to handle on snow packed street] Had no problem this past summer starting when engine was cold. Also does any one have any ideas why brothers wd was painted BLUE at the fracory? It is orange now

Folks,
I'm attempting to find old schematics of 1890's-1930 vintage tractors that I might utilize for metal sculpture of old tractors... Case, AC, Oliver, etc. I want to make these minitures to scale with much detail as possible.

If you know of any URL's or individuals I'd be appreciative.

Thanks,

Steve

Jim,
Make sure all the connections in the starting circuit, including the starter to engine ground surface, are clean and tight. Check the brushes in the starter, might be worn. Also check the starter for free operation, might have worn bushings and be dragging. Let us know what you find.

Phil

Have you changed the oil to the proper cold weather oil? the heaveier summer oils can be as thick as syrup in this cold weather we've had lately. Also check the condition of the batt. Even a good booster is'nt as good as a strong battery. After checking the batt. put the tester on the starter and a good ground and try cranking it. If the voltage drops sharply your not getting the power to the starter, which would mean bad battery cables or conections. when I referbed my Diesel I made all new 1 gauge cables and soldered, not just crimped the ends so I'm sure to get the most out of my batteries. My 2 cents, Merry Christmas. Dave,NC

Phil, Dave, I have 15/40 oil in it now. Earlier this fall I cleaned all the battery cables and all the connections. Battery tests out good. May have found the problem today. Brother inlaw said timing might be off, so I turned the distbrutor as I cranked the engine, retarded timing a little and engine cranked over fast and fired up. Will know for sure tomorrow if that was the problem. Also when the weather warms up some I am going to replace the battery and starter cables with ones designed for a six volt system, these seem to help cold starting problems on my pickup. Dave instead of soldering cable ends I pour hot lead into the cable ends. thanks for the information. Jim
