does any one have any experience with cracks between cylinders,I contacted local AGCO/ALLIS dealer and the service person said he has put a many of them together w/cracks and has not had any problems
Help!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! ! Larry

I am glad to see that I am not the only one with this problem.I am just getting into my dad's old 42 C and pulled the head off to find the same problem. I was thinking about a tie bolt between the sides of the block but was waiting to see what it looked like once I got the liners out.I am looking for a good used 3 3/8 cylinder liner if any of you guys have one after your rebuild projects.As far as durability I know our block was cracked since the 50's and it never leaked water into the oil.I would be worried that the liner would move around in the bore if the block spread to far. I look forward to getting this old girl back in the fields with the old hay mower. Have a happy new year T.J. ([email protected])

T.J. I had never heard of this block repair until I read the posting from all of you guys. My dad tought me,[years ago], how to weld such cracks. Heat cracks and freeze cracks. As you can imagine some of these involve alot of work. but I have never had block or head repair fail. This tie bolt repair is very interesting. If you would, please send a description of the process and bolt length,diameter,thread pitch and grade. I would be
happy to send you instructions on brazing external
freeze crecks. I have found them pretty common on a lot of old tractors, anti-freeze seemed optional
to alot of owners in years past. Thanks for the new repair idea. J.L.

It is not a problem as long as it cracked from over heating. If it is a freeze crack and is not flat across the top you might have a problem. Also if the crack has opened up you might want to think about installing a tie bolt in the center. I put a tie bolt in the engine for my pulling tractor. I also have a block that I am going to put a tie bolt in and take pictures to show someone else how it is done and will gladly share the pictures if your interested.

Before I put sleeves in an 8N I warmed the block and put epoxy in the crack and slid sleeves in. 3 years and still holding and I think a cross bolt is just a drilled and tapped hole in the right spot.

Jeff, you are correct. It is a bolt through the block to prevent further spreading of the crack.
If the crack is alowed to spread enough it can crack at the bottom and let water into the oil.
This would be an extreme problem and may never happen. It has happened from cracks caused from freezeing. Like I said earlyer, I will be taking pictures. It will be after the first of the year.

Gents,
I have disassembled 3 "C" engines, and all three are cracked in between the cylinders at the top, just as you describe. All three appeared to have been cracked for a long time, and wherent the reason that the engines failed. One of the three had a "tie bolt repair" c/out at some time in the past. basically all it was was a piece of threaded rod fitted thru holes drilled in both sides of the block, clamping it together. Really low tech fix. The other 2 blocks were just put together w/ cracks, and didnt seem to be causing any troubles. If the crack isnt spreading, I would just put it together, if I were you. Note, check bottom of block closely for cracks where o rings go, cracks here are major problem, and will definately cause water in oil. In his book "Busted tractor and Rusty Nuckles" (or something like that), Roger Welch mentions that he took apart 20 WC engines, and every single one was cracked at the top. He further goes on to say that he put together engines w/ these cracks w/o any trouble. The book is a great read, suggest you get a copy. Hope this helps,
