D17 Taction Booster System

I need help relating to the Traction Booster System on a D17 Series IV tractor. First of all what is the function of the Traction Booster System? What is the function of the various positions of the Traction Booster Control lever and the Position Control lever? Are the above two levers interrelated with the lift control lever? I bought and read the D17 Operating Manual; unfortunately the manual was not very specific on this aspect of the tractor. Other than a question on the Traction Booster system I really like the power of the D17. Previously I had a Ferguson TO-20. Thanks in advance to those who take the time to reply.

Ike, The function of the traction booster system is to put weight on the rear wheels for needed traction. What it does is, when your rear tires start to spin down, a draft sensing link (rod) senses to much pull, and in turn raises the lift arms to put more weight on the tires so that they stop spinning. Then when the tires stop spinning, they return the arms to the same postion they were before. As for the to levers, the postion control lever is for the maximun depth, and the traction booster lever is for setting the sensitivity or how soon it raises the lift arms. I pretty sure that is how it works. You will have to play with it to get it figured out. I hope this helps you out. Darrell(MN)

What is meant by the "maximum depth", in reference to the position control lever? Am also wondering if/how this will affect a front loader. Ours is a series II with a loader and we haven't yet tinkered with the traction booster much. Thanks

I have owned one of these things for 20 years and My brothers had one before that. I don't completely understand those two levers. I will give it a shot. One of the levers will control your maximum depth. The other lever works in conjunction and sets the sensitivity of the float on your draft. Your implement will either float with the contour of the land or it will remain at the same position all the time. You will figure this thing out. With a breaking-plow(moldboard plow), if you have your plow floating it will go up and down in the soil as you plow depending on the hardness or texture of the soil. I think that you would want to plow at a constant depth. On the other hand, if you were operating a rotary cutter i.e.Bush Hog, you would want the implement to follow the contour of the land. If you are not floating, the cutter would come up off the ground whenever your tractor went over a dip. These levers are very helpful in getting your equipment to do whatever it is supposed to do. I really like the system. I can use it, but I can't explain it very well. Experiment with it, you'll get the hang of it. I'm sure that someone else will explain it better.
