Anyone know the best way to get a small amount of rust out of a gas tank on a C?

Fred, Thats an awfull lot of responses for such a small amount of rust...lol...and it just shows how inovative some people can be. There is a lot of pretty good ideas there, I'm going to write some of these down for future reference. Darrell(MN)

Drain tank, remove valve and filter assembly, plug the valve hole with a pipe plug, remove tank from tractor, put 10 lbs of small gravel or crushed stone in tank, add three pounds of sand, some "automatic dish washing detergent" and very warm (not too hot) water to get a "slushy" mix. Put the cap on the tank, place the tank on a BASKETBALL and roll the tank around on the top of the basketball for a while. You keep the "slushy mix" in the tank on top of the basketball while rolling the tank from side to side and back and forth. At the same time you tip the tank to keep the "slushy mix" over the basket ball. Concentrate your efforts so that the "slushy mix" works on the rustiest areas most. Work the entire inside of the tank in this way. Should take about twenty minutes. This sounds difficult and is a lot harder to explain than it is to do once you get the feel of it. After you do one you will think it is easy. Dump out the mix, flush with clean warm or hot water and dry and oil the inside of the tank. When you put the tractor away for the winter or to not be used for a while add a little "chain saw" gas mix to the tank to prevent rusting. Hope this helps, Gordon in IN

Eastwood Co. has a kit that has all of the stuff you need to clean and coat the tank for about $35. You have to purchase the acid and solvent locally and you will spend close to $45 total. Be carefull with the acid if you go that route!!

Watkins Toilet Bowl Cleaner! You get it from your neighborhood Watkins dealer. Pour it in, roll the tank around, wait a few minutes and pour it out, (save it, as it will still be good for cleaning something else) then put your water hose in the filler hole and flush. Then go to your auto parts store and get a can of gas tank coating. It will put a nice plastic coating on the inside of your gas tank. Works great!!

I took the tank off and put a piece of small chain
in it with some mineral sprits. Then shake it like
a milk shake and rinse. Worked well for me.

I am not sure what is the best way, but a sure way is to take it to a radiator shop and have it boiled out in there acid tank and sealed or coated on the inside. They will weld up any pin holes and repair the thin spots. Can cost from 80.00 up. If you don't have the 80 bucks I guess it would not be the best way.

I think Dick has the right idea. I have used mauratic(sp?) acid available at lumber yards etc.
You have to rinse the tank out with water after cleaning with the acid. c tucker

ive had them put in the acid tank at the rad. shop this works well. the guy that owns the shop is a high school friend so he doesent charge me, that is the best way ive found

I do a lot of gas tanks and the best way I have found is to jack a tractor up on one side,lock the other side brake,strap the tank to the wheel that is off the ground,put about two cups of 1/2 inch rocks in the tank and run the tractor for about 1/2 hour.I tried running it with chain in the tank,took seven hours to get the chain out of the tank.
