Restore original decals?

My "new" WD45 has been repainted sometime in its past life and no attempt was made to protect the AC name decal or the WD45 decal on the side of the radiator. I can see where they are under the paint and I assume they are either in good shape or did a good job protecting the original paint before they peeled off. Is there any method for removing the paint over the original decals without totaly destroying them? (I know there are reproduction decals available but thought I'd see about the restoring the originals first.)

They would be most likely faded at best and any thing you do to to remove the paint will cause some damage. Best to buy new decales an place over the old.
