I would like to know how to tell what model my
tractor is. I've been told it's a WD45 but im not sure. Are all Allis serial numbers on the brake housing on the left rear side?

Denny, I don't have my serial # list in front of me right now but there are several places on the net you can check for the year. Physically, you can tell the difference by the curved shifting lever on the WD45 and the absence of the plate on the right side of the motor. I'm told that this is true except for some 1953 models where parts were overlapped to finish out the run of WD's.
I have a WD45, wide front and a 51 WD with what I think is a construction WD45 motor in it. I suspect some one needed a motor and found this one to replace the origional. The only thing that makes me think it was off a construction machine is that the motor is painted yellow (underneath the grease; I haven't started restoration yet)

You may not be able to tell the difference between the two just based on the shifting lever. All WD-45's have the curved shifting lever but about the last year of WD's also have the curves shifting lever. If it's a straight lever, then it's a WD for sure. If curved, it may be either. The curved lever was used when they changed to the constant mesh transmission.

A WD 45 has a larger displacement engine with an improved cyl. head, intake manifold, and an improved shifting transmission characterized by the curved shifter. First check the serial number below the left brake at the rear of the tractor it must be one for a WD 45. if it is an earlier serial number it is a WD in spite of what engine is in it. Putting a later engine in it will not make it a WD 45 just as a 1958 engine will not make it a D-17. The transmission on all but the last WD s is very different from later transmissions internally. In fact the shift levers will interchange and you cant tell from the out side except that the shifting is more difficult with the WD
