I am converting my 42 C back to orignal 6 volts. Starts great with 12 volt battery. Inserted my new 6 volt battery and pushed the foot rod and Grrrrr rrrrr rrrrr--slow turning sound form starter and then smoke form starter. Inserted 12 volt battery and I got a few sparkes from the starter that I had not seen before but to started up OK.???? Is my starter gone and just needs that 12 volts to turn it??? What should I do, I've already invested in new wiring harness, lt and magnetor switches and would like to get it back to 6 Volts. Does my starter need rebuilding?? HELP PLEASE

It worked once on 6V so it will again. The starter brush springs get weak with age --replace them . Make sure your battery cables are for 6v take the old ones to NAPA and say you want cables for 6v. Replace the starter switch about $8.00 . Make sure all connection surfaces are clean and shiney. Sandpaper the sides of the hole where the starter goes in. Sandpaper the mating surface on the outside of the starter. Sandpaper the big set screw point and the hole in the starter. Above all take the battery to a battery dealer and have it charged abd then tested. Good luck

You need to convert your starter back to six volts it may have not been changed to 12 volts and would work fine if your trac. starts easy , but back to six it will be slow or not wk. at all have 6 volt field coils put in armature is the same
