why do you see most of the D series tractors has a problem with third gear?

Third gear is used by far the most, best all around the yard gear so its only natural the one used the most may give trouble. The trouble starts when the gears are grinding while shifting into the gear, every time it grinds a little of the shift lug is removed. Over time enough shift lug is removed from the gear and coupler that it wont stay in gear anymore.

Oh yea, almost forgot. norm is correct. Used properly those D series transmission give years of trouble free use.
