I'm looking for some information for my son
He has a 1945 model B that won't start.

At first it would run but it started missing and had no power. A neighbor thought the points needed setting and started messing with it and it hasn't started since.

Since we know nothing at all about the magnito system, I was wondering if someone can explain to me how they operate or how to check them out or give me some advice as to where to start or where to get a good book on it.

I have worked on older cars for Over fifty years but have never messed with a magnito

Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated.

My C did the very same thing,and I did just what paul said, in checking it out getting it ready to start I got the rotor out of timing, once my uncle figured that out it ran like a sewing mechine. Good luck

My model B fails to start now too, all I did was repainted it, and in doing so, I removed the carbuerator for about 3 mos while I had a manifold ordered, etc, and until I could paint the entire tractor. I'm guessing if t appears to get no fuel, I have spark, new plugs, wires, original magneto (1948), engine was rebuilt supposedly before I bought it, ran okay, but always started hard due to tight moter and 6 volt system. Now it "pops" once after attempt to start on first try, then nothing. Carb drips gas after cranking on motor a while, so gas is backed up in reservoir I would guess, has an updraft/carb gas system, which I take to mean that the engine vacuum is how gas enters into cylinders, tractor sat about 1 yr since last started. New carb in order?, rebuild?, check timing? Thanks for any help advice, diagnosis, etc.

Since it was hard to start before the paint job, and now won't start at all, maybe you used the wrong color? Seriously, I would look at the valves, compression, etc. I assume you have checked the timing with the timing mark on the flywheel and haven't got any spark plug wires crossed, etc. It sounds like maybe a sticking valve or two. When you refer to a "tight" engiine after an over haul I assume you are talking about tight engine bearings which you really shouldn't have if the clearances are right. If the engine is a bit stiff because of new rings and sleeves, they should loosen very quickly after it is run the first time. If it's still tight after a few hours, I would take another look at the bearing clearances. The fact that you have gas running out of the bottom of the carb indicates that the engine is really flooded, unless the float is sticking. You only mention the gas running out after cranking a while. If the float is sticking, the gas will run out whether you crank it or not. Leaking/sticking valves will prevent the cylinders from drawing gas/air mixture thru the carburetor properly and result in very hard starting and uneven running. Just another thought. First check to see if you hava good hot spark from the plug wires. You should hear a loud "click" from the impulse coupling as you crank th e engine. If you don't hear a click, the impulse isn't working and the mag will have to be removed and repaired. If some one worked on the mag and wasn't familiar with it they could have put it together with th e rotor out of time. There aare marks on the gears to show how they should mesh. One has a chamfered tooth to identify it. Points should be gapped at .015" and be clean.

Bad plugs and wires can also make it miss as can leaky or sticking valves. Good Luck, Paul
