CA starter problems

There has been considerable discussion over the past couple years here about starting the CA. I have been involved too. I was told I need a bigger batter cable, 8 volts, etc. etc.. Nothing helped. It will grunt and maybe fire off. I use the batter charger "start" mode a lot.

Yesterday I took the starter to a repair shop. He tested it and all is OK, bushings and all. He said his experience in Monatna in the winter is that if the battery is grounded to the frame on the older equipment it is a problem. Ground to the block as the old joining surfaces are no longer good connections for a ground. Could be. However on the CA there is only one connection between the ground connection on the tube (which holds the battery).

Now I have looked at the starter and question if the starter is really making a good ground. I thought maybe tomorrow I would reinstall the starter and put solder (cold) into the fitting as I force the starter in. Also clean up the connecting surfaces good first.

But, how do we keep the contact good over the years????

I've got my dad's old "B", in some ways not a lot different. We never got it to start well when I was a kid. You're on the right track with the ground problem, and the first place to look is where the starter slides into the torque tube. We replaced the screw that locks the starter into the housing with a bolt. I cleaned that bolt with acid, took it to school and copper-plated it in the chemistry lab, after turning a taper on it in the machine shop. That worked for about ten years, but after a while the plating came off, the bolt got rusty,...and...guess what. Since then I have put a GM alternator on it, and try not to run that old starter motor for more than a couple of seconds. Most of us know that these old Allis'es will start on about the first round anyway.

I had the same problem, tryed and changed everything just no change, put on a new bendix[?] and it will spin the tar off. It is still 6v and will stay that way. When it was young it would start at -20 no problen. Now it gets a better home over nite.

Don, My dad bought a CA new in 1951,farmed 80 acres with it for about 30 years and to my knowledge never once started it with the starter. The dealer replaced the starter and did anything else he could think of,to no avail. Three years ago I got the tractor from him. The fist thing I did was replace the generator with an altenator.I changed the coil to a 12v and replaced the battery and lights.The thing pops right off now.I mow a couple of acres with it now but it starts so good with the crank I seldom use the starter. I'm sure the oringinal problem was either cables or ground but I guess I'll never know now. c tucker

I had quite a bit of trouble with my CA starting. I moved the ground to the housing below the battery box and then ran an auxillary ground wire from that point to the back of the starter. So far I haven't had anymore trouble.
