i am new to yesterdays tractors and am wondering how i can visually telling the difference between a generator and an alternator. i am helping with an allis C that has some electrical problems.

Generator is cylindrical, usually about 4 inches in diameter and 6 or 7 inches long (ie, longer than it is wide), usually painted black or tractor color. Alternator is shorter than it is wide- usually about 6 inches in diameter, and 3 or 4 inches long- almost always cast aluminum and unpainted. Alternator is irregular in shape- many bumps, vent, louvers, etc.- Generator (always made of steel, not aluminum) is more smooth and cylindrical. If the tractor is "stock", it has a generator- but by now, many have been converted to alternator.
