My dad has a AC 185 and the pto wont stay in gear.
Just as soon as you let out on the clutch it jumps out of gear. Is this an easy fix for the average man or will it have to go to the shop?

Hi Ken, I did not answer your post earlier because I don't own a 185. I figured someone else with one would answer you. I do have a 175. I have replaced shift forks and rails. My opinion is that you will need someone with a higher than average knowledge of these tractors (Higher than I have anyway). You don't have to take it to an Agco dealer. There are plenty people who can do that work for much less than Agco-Allis will do it.

Ken, to my knowlege, all 185's had hydraulic pto clutches. I think your problem is hydraulic related. The hydraulic pump produces volume under pressure. The first few gallons per minute are sent (priority flow) to the steering system. Oil leaves the steering valve & goes to the power director valve & to the pto valve. If there is not enough oil supply to run all these things, the pto oil supply will be the first to feel it. Without enough oil to hydraulically squeeze the pto clutch plates together, the pto will disengage. The same oil presssure also holds the pto control valve in it's engaged position. Oil pressure also holds the control valve in it's engaged position. If this occurs more at lower engine speeds, its very likely a pump problem. Check your hydraulic oil level & the pump suction line for air (suction) leaks.
