I just bought my first tractor, ser. WD140666. It starts well, but after a few minutes, power decreases to the degree it cant pull itself up a steep hill; seems like maybe timing is off, and 2 cylinders pop together, but only after warmed up. There is a good crack in the exhaust menifold, but I cant believe it can have this effect (gas powered). Otherwise it seems to be in good shape, has a front end loader, and hydraulics work well.
Any ideas about the problem will be appreciated.

I just replaced my manifold due to the same problem(sort of) it would warm up, then die under load. If the outside of the manifold is visibly cracked, and the internals of it may be, too. Hence, it may be starving for fuel because it is bringing in exhaust gas instead of a good air fuel mixture. I shoulda known when my 45 would only run well under about 1/2 choke. This can be bad for valves.

Pat
Valves may not have enough clearance with the rocker arm, so that when engine warms up there is no clearance and valves do not fully close.

You may have a magneto or distributer problem. Sounds like it is firing 2 cyls at the same time after warm-up. Bad plug wires, rotor cap, rotor, condenser or possibly the coil after it gets hot.
Mine lost power and missed after it got hot and the condenser in the mag was bad. You should not really have sotty, black plugs either unless you idle it a lot and seldom work it.

Thanks for the tip, Gary. I also picked up a few other ideas from boards and a local fellow who tinkers with old tractors a lot. By the way, I'm on Lake Erie west of Dunnville.

Check out the fuel situation carefully because by going up hills it requires more gas and if the fuel filter is partially plugged or for some reason it can't get enough fuel ,then you will lose power.

Thanks, Ted; I'll check it. Exhaust is black and plugs are dry, full of carbon, so I was assuming it was getting lots of gas.
