I also posted this on the Oliver board. Does anyine have an opinion on the pluses and minuses of a D-17 versus an Oliver 880?

I have driven them both, and have owned a D-17 for 20 years and you are talking about apples and oranges. A 17 went 50 horse and an 880 a heck of a lot more than that. A D-17 was a tractor that worked well with mounted and semi-mounted equipment and an 880 wasn't except for maybe a mid-mount row-crop cultivator. The 880 I drove pulled 5 14's through tough clay, working hard. Here at home on a sandy loam the 17 had all it needed with 4 14's. Both great tractors, but different critters. If you are looking to buy one or the other, it depends on your applications. I will never sell our 17. Good Luck. Tom

I have an 880 gas, and love it. I have also used a neighbors gas D17 which is also a goodmachine. I prefer the 880, even though it is somewhate larger. The big advantage is 6 forward speeds, and 2 reverse. The 880 also has a 6 cylinder engine as opposed to 4, even though they are nearly equivelant horsepower, the 880 seems to have more torque, and mine definitely gets better fuel economy than the D17. Just my opinion, I'm sure someone will like the D17 more than the 880, So if you can try them both out, you could make up your own mind.

Why do you consider a 6 speed forward, 2 reverse transmission an advantage over an 8 speed forward, 2 reverse that the D-17 has?
