WD engine cylinder liner O ring seal

I am working on a WD that has been parked for 25 yrs. The frozen engine is apart now, however the surface of the block that meets with the O rings at the bottom of the cylinder liners is rusted down to the top O ring. Does anyone know if the lower O ring is enough to do the job. It seems like if one won't seal then two isn't going to over the long run. When I was in the navy I repaired a similar problem with epoxy and it was succesfull. Any experience with this??

First of all jb weld should be used a last chance item. I would suggest you take a new cylinder liner and the block to a good machine shop and have them put new counter bores in them.

This will solve your problem for the next fifty years.

Also i would clean the counter bore really well and inspect for cracks in the webbing between the cylinders before doing anything!

Thanks Pat. I am not sure what you mean by reboreing the counter bore, this is at the top of the liner, this problem is at the bottom where the O rings are. And I do plan a real close inspection before I spend much on the block. At this point it seems to be sound. As a point of interest I was talking to a man , while out looking for transmission parts, who mentioned that he had seen a block cracked as you mentioned, in the narrow web between the cylinders, repaired by putting a bolt through the block to clamp it together. While this seems a last resort to me, it probably would work if you could make the crack water tight.

I have used J-B weld to fix this problem on cat and cummins engines. I am not a big J-B weld fan but this is one place it does work. good luck.

Thanks Lee, that is probably exactly what I will do. even though it seems that one O ring should seal, why take chances. The engines I repaired while in the navy this way had water circulating in water jackets in the liner itself and only one O ring above and one below where the water flowed into the liner from the block, they went for thousands of hours after this repair which by the way was done with Devcon.

devcon is an excellent product, probably better than j-b weld. as for durability we repaired a 3304 cat engine with j-b and it now has over 20,000 hours on it and no problems.

I to have used devcon, jb, and red hand on diesels up 3000 HP with no problems. Just make sure before you use it that you wire brush out all the rust and have bright shiny metal before using the epoxys. then sand it smooth, but then again you know how to do it as you did in the Navy. I too was in the Navy and retired from the Coast Guard. we always made it home
