Stupid question time...

My '41 B always seems to be blowing a little bit of oil through the breather and onto the valve cover. Is it normal to have a bit of oil blow through the breather?

Also, how often should the oil bath element be cleaned? Are there any tricks to it?

Be kind, I am still very new to this and yuppie farmer-want-to-be's don't learn very fast. :)

My question now, how much blow by (and oil) is too much? I cleaned off the valve cover in July when I checked and adjusted the rocker arms. Now, nearly 4 months later and after mowing some pretty tall weeds and grass, I have a circle about 6 to 8 inches in diameter. Is that something you'd look at and tell yourself "I'm gonna have to fix that some day" or is it more of a "Oh shoot! I HAVE GOT to get that fixed today!" This is probably in my manual or on this website somewhere but... what variances in compression between cylinders is considered "normal"?

Oh yeah, Butch, I did get a manual. I guess I was looking for the tricks from the masters. I'm off to the store to get some purple stuff tonight! Thanks for the insight.

If that is all the oil you have in that time, I would wash out the breather, wipe off the valve cover, and go watch TV or read a book.
Probably be a long time before you need to fix anything. The mesh filter in the top of the breather will catch droplets of oil and when enough little droplets collect you have drops that can drip down on the valve cover. Wash it out real well and you will probably not see oil for some time.

Sounds like you have a little blowby. Take the breather off and place the palm of your hand over the hole and see if you feel pressure build up in the valve cover. If it builds pressure fast on your hand its time for a compression check. You will always get some pressure but it would seem that you have a lot of air being pumped into the pan to have oil blowing out.

Scott, First of all, obtain an operators manual for your tractor from an AGCO dealer or look in parts and services on this site. All of the service information is in that manual. The oil from the breather cap is from blow-by, meaning the rings are starting to wear. I wouldn't worry about it in small amounts. There are two areas to service on the air cleaner, the oil in the cup should be dumped every so often (look in the manual) and the whole air cleaner needs to be washed out once a year. To do this remove the cup and unbolt the air cleaner body from the motor. Place the body in a 5 gallon bucket with a strong solution of "Purple Cleaner" from Auto Zone and water. Let it soak a while and shake it around to remove the dirt.
