Can anyone give me technical detail about the A C experimental tractor of 1959. In short, how does it work.

The fuel cell used a Silver catalyst for the reaction I beleive. There was a AC dealer fuel cell demo kit on e-bay last week. It had an instruction sheet with the details.

Hannes, I can't tell you much about it, but I can tell you that it is out on loan from the Smithsonian, and on display for the next 3 years in Hutchinson, MN. Someone out there should know how to get a hold of the museum, they might be able to get you some information about it, or if your close, drive over and see it in person. Darrell(MN)

I don't have much technical data but it was a modified D12 with an electric motor driving the transmition. It produced 3,000 lbs of drawbar pull but didn't move fast. The short answer to "what is a fuel cell?" is when you combine oxygen and hydrogen you get electricity and water so it is a kind of battery. This tractor had 1008 fuel cells that mixed primarily propane and Oxygen to produce a DC voltage. The only by-products were pure water and carbon dioxide. The tractor was donated to the Smithsonian.
