I have a D model tractor and I can not find a seral #. The engine is a 4cyl. disel with 3.320" dia. piston and dry sleeves. Engine seral # is A 10003 u . The casting # on the block is 302299-11 with date 22/10/63. I understand that the D14 came out with a few disels but I can't find any info on them. Can anyone help.

The ED 40 has its # on the LH top of the rear transmission housing. The 23C engine# is below the dynamo on the RH side. The ED40 has a 4 speed main shift with Hi/Lo while the D270 and 272 have only 4 speed boxes.

23C engine parts are available as are parts lists but I have never seen a w/s repair manual.

The D270 is very B-like with modified tinwork. The D272 has a different style and backend. There are two common types of D272 a standard (B height) and a low orchard tractor. Not very many 270 and 272s were built. The 3/144 perkins fitted is similar to the Fordson Dexta, and the 3cyl MF35.

There weren't any diesel D-14s. There were diesel D-15s, but they had 3.562" dia. bore. What you have may be an ED-40 which was English made and had a Standard-Ricardo diesel engine with a 3.3125" bore (I believe the same engine was previously used in some Ferguson 35s). There also were the English made D-270 and D-272 which used a Perkins P3-144 diesel. The ED-40 looks a good bit like a domestic D-series, but it has a big bell housing at the rear of the engine block and compared to domestic models.

Thanks for the info. Now dose anyone have any idea where I can find more info on the ED-40 AC. Manuals or pictures would be a big help. And is it posible to find parts for the Standard-Ricardo.

There was an article about restoring an ED-40 on this site a little while ago - check the article archives. The Standard-Ricardo engine was used in the Ferguson FE-35 prior to MF's deal with Perkins, so that might be another route to find engine parts. Best description of ED-40 specs is in the recently published "Allis-Chalmers Data Book" by Terry Dean. Best pictures of the English AC's are in "Allis-Chalmers Agricultural Machinery" by Bill Huxley. Norm Swinford's book on AC Ag Equipment and "Allis-Chalmers Tractors" by C. H. Wendel also have some pictures of the ED-40 and short descriptions. These books should be available for purchase from this site (or amazon.com or barnesandnobel.com).
