Remedy for poor starting C?

Any tricks to get my C to start/turn over better? It's got an original 6 volt system and starts just barely OK in the summer but when it gets cold, forget it. Fully charged battery hardly makes it roll over. I've checked the cables and they appear OK. Is there a way to improve turn-over speed w/o going to a 12 volt system?

you are on right track about connections clean and tight , good heavy 6volt ground cableand one last thing to try get yourself an 8volt batterythey are available at most farm supply stores and your 6 volt system will charge it. good luck Rod

My "C" turns over in -20. I use it to plow snow in winter. I would print out Phil's reply and go right down the list. Clean off all rust and paint to make sure you have good conections. I would start with a new battery and work my way out from there. good luck.

Dave,
Duke and T. Siefert are on the right track. My neighbor has a '52 CA that is still 6V and it spins like crazy even in the cooler weather we've had recently. The key is that everything has to be "right" for the 6V system to work properly. Take the starter to a shop and have them check it. Replace any old battery cables and clean the connection points thoroughly before reconnecting the cables. Also, connect the ground cable as close to the starter as possible. Clean the front mounting surface of the starter and the surface it mates to on the engine for a good ground. You probably ought to coat these surfaces lightly with heavy oil or a light grease so they don't rust. Clean any contacts on the starter switch. Check the connection on the starter where the cable bolts on. If the stud twists, the connection to the starter windings can be damaged, causing high resistance. To summarize, check every connection to be clean and tight, check switch contacts for burning and pitting, check the cables for any fraying or insulation split or pulled back (corrosion starts here and reduces the current capabilities of the wire) and last, but not least, check your charging system to be sure it's keeping your battery charged. The comment about the meter jumping around makes me suspect that your voltage regulator or cutout isn't working properly.
Sorry for this being so long, but there's a bunch of stuff to check on these old beasts to keep them running right.

Thanks Phil and everyone else who responded. I admire these little tractors but sometimes they tax one's patience as they get older and older. I will follow the steps you suggested and hope for the best. Evidently there is something wrong when they can start at -20 and mine won't at 50.

Another possibility is bad bushings/bearings in the starter. Pull the rear plate off the starter and check the bushing.

Possibilities are weak battery
dirty or worn switch contacts
battery cables too light, need heavy gage for 6volt.
Starter brushes worn, replace
starter brush springs weak replace

Battery connectors or any connection poor, take apart and shine up.
