Allis Chalmers WD45 starter gear

I have an Allis Chalmers WD45. The gear on the bendix is mashed on the end and the spring that shoves the gear up onto the flywheel is broken. I don't want to put much money into this. Any Ideas?

I have ordered a new bendix which includes spring and gear from AGCO in Greensburg In... $70.00. It shows up on Wed. hopefully that will take care of it....

I have used 12 volt on my WD-45 for about 5 years. The only problem I had was the switch. I replaced it one time. I did replace the large spring while it was still 6 volt. I don't know of many people that have had starter problems on AC's converted to 12 volt. My guess there is something wrong with the starter. Be brave, tear it down and look at it. You may see something, if not take it to a starter shop. The only problem you may have is getting the brushes back on the armature.

Has the tractor been changed over to 12 volt? I had this same problem with mine after changing it over. It kept breaking the spring. I think 12 volts spins the starter faster and slams the spring harder. Isolved the problem in mine by haveing the local auto electric shop rewind the starter for 12 volt. the price was less than 100.00.
