I am looking at a Allis Chalmers D14 that is for sale. Is this a good tractor? Can you get parts? What are they worth? This one is in fair condition and runs on propane. Thanks for any help anyone can give.

The price range that I've seen lately for D14's are $1800-$3400. They are a very popular tractor so parts are relatively easy to come by. The one part that you really can get gouged on are piston sleeves. They are a special design for the 160 ci engine so you have to buy from a dealer. Some early D14's had the less powerful 149 ci engine and those sleeves are cheaper. At any rate I have a D14 with a 3pt conversion and use it daily and I really like it. Keep in mind they do NOT have live hydrualics or live PTO. GREAT TRACTOR!!

On the contrary, the D14 DOES have live PTO and hydraulics. The forward motion of the tractor can be stopped using the power director and the PTO and hydraulics will continue to run and you have one power shift in each of 4 gears in the transmission for a total of 8 speeds.

If you use the hand clutch to stop forward motion you do have live pto and hyd. But in many cases such as roto-tilling or mowing when shifting from forward to reverse the foot-clutch is used. That kills power to the pto and hyd. and for that reason it is not a true live pto.

regarding shifting foward to reverse: you can
lower the throttle a bit and quickly shift the
transmission without the foot clutch provided
you step on the brakes (to stop the gears)...
doesn't always work because you missed the shift
(and the hand clutch in neutral)

The bottom line is: If you use the pto alot when going from forward to reverse the d14 isn't nearly as user friendly as a tractor with a truely live pto like some of the d12's have. If you buy a d14 expecting a live pto "like the d12 or other similar tractors have you'll be sadly disappointed. So lets get on to bigger matters.
