My generator has a wobbly pulley, doesn't charge, and makes a grinding noise. Is it cheaper to rebuild or convert to 12v?

I just bought a rebuilt generator $97.00 the whole thing. My g was converted to 12v, but they put to big of alt. on it and they cut the hood and back cover plate to make it fit. Doug

I am not familiar with the generator on a G, but I had my Delco-Remy 6v generator rebuilt for about $50 at a local auto electrical shop. The price included new bearings, bushings, brushes, seals, etc. It was dead before I had it rebuilt, and it had the grinding noise, too. I consider it money well-spent.
