Cutout Problem 1947 C

I have rewired my 47 C back to a 6 volt positive ground system. Rebuilt mag and starter and it starts good and runs strong. When it is running the ampmeter shows a proper charge as noted in the manuals for a 3 pos. switch. I put an off-the-shelf cutout on it (not made for Allis C). when I shut down the engine, the cutout does not drop out and the battery drains at a 20 amp. discharge rate according to the ampmeter. When I manually open the cutout relay it makes a spark. What do I have wired wrong? Or, should I buy a cutout specifically made for Allis C?

The cutout should only have two wires, one goes to ground and the other goes to the amp meter. If you do have a two wire cutout, switch the wires around, and if it still drains the battery get one of the new electronic cutouts. They are marked for eather positive or negitive grounds and they are not mechanical and are not prone to sticking.

The cutout I had purchased at TSC was a cheap aftermarket product. I took the cover off and twiddled with the spring tension and was able to make it work correctly for about 1/2 dozen tries.
But, after running the tractor til it was good & warm, the cutout stuck closed again. I checked out several options, including a new, solid state coutout from Sandy Lake Implement, and I was fortunate to find locally a rebuilding firm that had some rebuilt original cutouts on hand dirt cheap! I will be putting one on Ol Rusty tonight.
